Multimedia History

How to use original material yourself

*  To create a new page yourself and link it in

Open your word processor, and open a new Web Page. Format the page – choose a theme and background for the page. Insert your text and insert any pictures. Since you have saved the multimedia history on your C: drive, open my computer, Local History/ Additions, and save your new page in the additions folder. You could easily save these items in any other appropriate folder, but if you do use the additions folder, it will be easier to keep track of them. Also, as you have your own transferable index on A: (your floppy) it will be easy to keep that separate and transfer your work with you. Also you only need to keep backup copies of the indexes and the Additions folder on many occasions. Any hyperlinks in the original pages or changes to the main material will need you to copy or backup the whole work.

*  To create a hyperlink to your page

Highlight the text you want to be the link, on the toolbar click insert then hyperlink, and browse to the name of the file you have created (C: Local History/Additions/your new file) I suggest you add a tool tip to each new page to flag up, saying “new material” or “additional material”. Then save the page. The link will not be active until the page is saved.

*  To Index an existing item

With your word processor, Open the file on your floppy disk called “Additional Material to the Multimedia History” save your hyperlink here, and the files (pages) themselves in C: Local History/ Additions.

*  To use the additional materials

To modify or use a map you will need to use “Coreldraw” the map is opened from Collections/maps, and exported as a .tiff file. Then it can be imported onto your page. If all new work is saved in C:Local History/ additions, then you will keep track of it. Even if you created new hyperlinks in the original files and save them back to their original on C:, overwriting the original, the fact that all new work is saved in the same folder “Additions”, will make it easy to collate or catalogue or pass on to others.

*  To modify a page or picture

As long as you have copied the materials as recommended, to your hard drive, you can open the page with a wordprocessor, alter an item and save to disk. See the location of the file by looking at the address bar in internet explorer. Picture properties can be altered in a word document by clicking on it and resaving the file after.
